We all succumb to the stresses and strains of modern life at times. And is there any better remedy than being by the sea? The hush of the waves, the feel of the salty air on your skin as you take in breathtaking views…
That's what makes the Wales Coast Path so special. And as this year marks ten years since its launch, there's never been a better time to join the thousands of people who've found their souls soothed along its many miles.
It's the first path in the world to follow the entire coastline of a country – 870 miles to be exact – with many wonders to explore along the way. Hardy folk can walk all the way round, but there are smooth, sections that are great for toddlers, buggies and wheelchairs.
It's best for walkers then?
No, you can run too! Seriously though, there are so many different ways to explore. Embark on a cycling adventure (there are fantastic paths for families), or explore on horseback or even by sea kayak. It's a haven for wildlife spotters – look out for dolphins, seals, the gorgeous puffins of Skomer Islandand, if you're lucky, whales, basking sharks and orca.
Stop and spend a night at one of the route's many picturesque villages or friendly harbour towns like Tenby or Aberaeron. Visit clifftops castles like mighty Caernarfon and Chepstow Castle at the start of the Wales Coast Path in South Wales. You'll also find Roman ruins, heritage sites and landmarks like St Davids Cathedral.
Beaches are plentiful and gorgeous – the spectacular beaches of West Wales and Cardigan Bay are not to be missed. Needless to say, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to restaurants dishing up sparklingly fresh fish and shellfish.
I'm sold! How can I find out more and start planning my trip?
There are loads of great resources available from Visit Wales – this trip planner is a great place to start and this Coast Path Guide is packed with information. If apps are your thing, download the Wales Coast Explorer app, which helps you identify wildlife, flora, explore heritage sites along the way.
Happy exploring!
