Cyber Attack The top lawmakers from the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party asked the CEOs of Verizon, AT&T, and Lumen Technologies for answers about a major cyber breach by a group with ties to the Beijing regime. The three companies and others were victims of a CCP-backed cyberattack and that hackers had access to the networks for months or longer. "The implications of any breach of this nature would be difficult to overstate," the lawmakers wrote in the letter.
The committee previously examined Volt Typhoon, a CCP-backed hacking campaign that had successfully compromised critical U.S. infrastructure. The new campaign is reportedly an effort by "Salt Typhoon," a separate unit closely linked with the CCP's spy agency. Inflation Pressure Wholesale inflation rose 1.8 percent in annual terms in September, while an index of underlying inflation jumped 2.8 percent, with both values exceeding market expectations and signaling that inflationary pressures continue to percolate. The headline pace of wholesale inflation, which eventually tends to get passed along to consumers and therefore serves as a leading indicator of where the Consumer Price Index is headed, inched down from an annualized 1.9 percent in August to 1.8 percent in September. Despite the decline, it defied market expectations for a deeper drop to 1.6 percent.
Core wholesale inflation, which excludes food and energy and is a measure of underlying inflationary pressures, rose to 2.8 percent year-over-year in September, up from 2.6 percent in August. New Vows Former President Donald Trump vowed to put an end to double taxation on Americans who live abroad. Vice President Kamala Harris vowed to form a bipartisan advisory council.
Trump's promise relates to a U.S. law that requires Americans to file tax returns every year, even if they live and work abroad. It also requires them to potentially pay taxes on their worldwide income in addition to any taxes they may have to pay in their country of residence. Harris said she welcomed the diversity of viewpoints, and did not mind having her ideas challenged, "because the best ideas will survive those challenges."
