NASA Announces Winners of Photographer of the Year Awards

The winners of NASA's seventh annual Photographer of the Year awards are in. The out-of-this-world images all offer scenes of the space agency's activities captured by staff photographers on Earth in 2024. Pictures were selected across four categories: Documentation, Portrait, People, and Places. The winner in the Places category is the striking shot above, titled "Blue Supermoon Rises Over the 'Rocket City.'" It was taken by NASA photographer Michael DeMocker in Huntsville, Alabama, which is nicknamed the "Rocket City" as it houses NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. The image depicts a moon that's both a supermoon, meaning it's one of the largest and brightest full moons of the year, and a seasonal blue moon, i.e., the third full moon in a season with four. Other highlights include moody portraits of astronauts Nichole "Vapor" Ayers and Zena Cardman and a quirky documentary photograph of a simulated moonwalk in northern Arizona. And in the spirit of last week's Memorial Day holiday, you'll also find a shot of astronaut Andre Douglas raising an American flag during a weeklong field test alongside astronaut Kate Rubins. "Nepo Baby" Jack Henry Robbins Lends Humor to PSA for Real Babies

If you've spent time on social media lately, you may have come across actor Jack Henry Robbins — son of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins — poking fun at himself in a series of videos. The 36-year-old has been playing off the recent discourse around "nepo babies," or people who've gotten a leg up from having successful parents, by unabashedly (and jokingly) using his famous mom and dad for clout. Now, Robbins is lending his humor to a more serious cause: helping real babies. The actor teamed up with the nonprofit National Diaper Bank Network to star in and co-direct a PSA raising awareness for the millions of American parents who lack basic necessities for their little ones. According to the organization, 1 in 2 families with young children are in need of diapers. "The fact that half of U.S. families with young children can't afford diapers is a serious issue, so it's an honor to use my comedy and nepo baby character for something so clearly good and important as their mission to end diaper need," Robbins shared in a news release. A Public Golf Course in Nebraska Is Taking the Sport by Storm — Without Surging Prices

Nestled in a remote village of Nebraska lies a vast swath of farmland that looks like it could go on forever. But this particular tract isn't a farm of any kind — it's Landmand Golf Club, a public golf course where getting a tee time is nearly as competitive as scoring Taylor Swift tickets. This year, the course sold out all of its available tee times in 50 minutes (hence The Wall Street Journal calling it "America's toughest tee time"). But despite Landmand's popularity, owner Will Andersen has yet to raise the greens fee from $150 — which he told The Journal "is a lot, especially in this area." He added: "We felt like it was pretty dang fair for what you get and how fun it is. And we'd just rather not gouge people." Andersen, a fourth-generation farmer and avid golfer, is the visionary behind the prairie land-turned-golf course. And in the almost three years it's been open, Landmand has gone above and beyond to make golf accessible to all, from local farmers to tourists looking for a novel experience. "I've never seen demand like this," said Jake Gordon, co-founder of a company that helps manage Landmand's waitlist. "It's stratospherically above even the busiest daily courses in America."

Dr. Henry Heimlich Publishes His Technique to Stop Choking

Today, the Heimlich maneuver is one of the go-to methods for stopping choking, and when used correctly, is reported to have about an 85% success rate. It's likely saved tens of thousands of lives since its widespread adoption — and we have a Cincinnati surgeon to thank. In a 1974 medical journal article, Henry Heimlich wrote that the world needed "a first aid procedure that doesn't require specialized instruments or equipment and can be performed by any informed layman," adding: "I have developed such a procedure." By 1976, the American Red Cross had released guidelines for using the technique. And it seems Heimlich was a hero until the end: In 2016, at age 96, he successfully performed the maneuver on a choking woman at the nursing home where he resided. He died later that year.
