MIND Diet May Curb Dementia Risk by up to 25%, Study Finds

Most diets are practically synonymous with too-good-to-be-true promises, but the MIND diet — which stands for "Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay" — might be as good as advertised, even if started later in life, according to a new study. Over a period of 10 years, researchers studied participants between the ages of 45 and 75 who followed the brain-boosting diet, which emphasizes foods like olive oil, berries, leafy greens, and whole grains to curb dementia and age-related cognitive decline. They found that participants who closely followed the MIND diet had a 9% lower risk of dementia compared to those with overall low adherence to the diet. And those who improved their adherence to the MIND diet over time — even if they didn't follow it closely at first — had a 25% lower risk of dementia compared to those whose adherence declined. The takeaway: "It is never too late to adopt a healthy diet to prevent dementia," lead study author Song-Yi Park said in a news release. See which foods the MIND diet encourages (and limits).

The winners of the 2025 National Geographic Traveller Photography Competition have been revealed — and the subjects range from a vibrant rainbow staircase in France to a geothermal pool that looks like a dragon's eye (pictured here) and more. Every year, National Geographic Traveller (UK) organizes the contest, which is open to amateur and professional photographers from the United Kingdom and Ireland, to highlight the best in travel photography. Now in its 13th year, the contest features six categories: People, City Life, Landscape, Wildlife, Food, and Portfolio. Out of thousands of submissions, 18 photographers were selected as finalists before the winning shots were chosen. "Our competition goes from strength to strength, with this year's easily one of the strongest yet," said Pat Riddell, editor of the travel magazine. The grand prize winner is Justin Cliffe, who captured a striking image of a woman from the Red Dao minority in northwestern Vietnam's Lào Cai province, embroidering at the door of her property alongside her great-granddaughter. Intricate embroidery is a skill that members of the Red Dao community pass down through generations, from mother to daughter. See the winning shot and other contest highlights.

Up, Up, and Away! Beloved Big Bear Eaglet Sunny Takes Her First Flight
Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam
Cue the tears of joy: In a bittersweet moment many parents can relate to, one of Jackie and Shadow's babies has officially flown the nest. The major milestone occurred Monday morning when Sunny, a 3-month-old eaglet, jumped off a branch, flapped her wings, and ventured out into the world for the first time. "Sunny did it!" Friends of Big Bear Valley, a nonprofit that has been documenting the beloved California eagle family via a 24-hour live stream, wrote on Facebook. "She put up her wings to catch the wind and then jumped up and let those beautiful wings carry her. She circled back around toward Shadow and Jackie's favorite roost tree." It's still TBD whether or not Sunny will return to the nest, but if she's anything like the siblings before her, there's a good chance she'll come back for at least a visit (fingers crossed!). Thankfully, Jackie and Shadow aren't empty nesters just yet, as Sunny's sister Gizmo stayed behind ... for now. Watch Sunny take her first flight.

Healing through photographs
When Nayana Gadde isn't taking care of others as a nurse at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, she's spending her time capturing "soul pictures" — end-of-life portraits of pets and their families. The passion project started after she unexpectedly lost her cat Maggie and wished she had professional photos to help keep the feline's memory alive. "To be able to be that person that gives someone those images, it's everything," she said of her service, which she offers for free with a donation to a local senior pet rescue.
