WORDS OF WISDOM | "Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do." | EDGAR DEGAS | | Good morning! Today we're covering the completion of Israel's counterattack on Iran, a large US weapons sale to Taiwan, and gratitude as medicine. | TOP NEWS | | Israel's Completes Counterstrike Israel says that air strikes on military targets in Iran on Saturday morning have concluded its retaliation for Iran's ballistic missile attacks. Iran said that the Israeli strikes hit military bases, caused "limited damage," and killed two soldiers.
Israel's hourslong attack ended just before sunrise in Tehran, with the Israeli military saying it targeted "missile manufacturing facilities used to produce the missiles that Iran fired at the state of Israel over the last year." It also said it hit surface-to-air missile sites and "additional Iranian aerial capabilities."
Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli attacks on military bases and said Iran will respond. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged Iran not to respond. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemned the strikes on Iran without naming Israel, saying they violated its sovereignty and international laws and norms. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the deal on Oct. 25, marking the largest single military sale to Taiwan during President Joe Biden's administration and the 17th overall since 2021. The proposed arms sale, which Congress has 30 days to review before it becomes final, consists of three components: the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, valued at $1.16 billion, and two radar systems, which account for $828 million.
While there was no immediate reaction from Chinese officials to the proposed sales, Beijing has repeatedly condemned U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, arguing they undermine China's sovereignty and escalate tensions across the Taiwan Strait. U.S. officials maintain that the sales are defensive in nature and consistent with longstanding U.S. policy to provide Taiwan with the weapons systems it needs for self-defense. In contrast, those in the control group—who did not practice gratitude—experienced increased aggression after being insulted.
Those practicing gratitude were significantly less likely to retaliate against others. This correlation is akin to laughter interrupting physical exertion: Just as it is impossible to continue a strenuous workout while laughing, gratitude elicits a psychological state where aggression and anger find little foothold.
The effect of gratitude in displacing hostile feelings highlights it as a personal virtue and tool in fostering empathetic social interactions. Though it's often overshadowed by more famous landmarks like the Washington Monument or Mount Rushmore, the National Monument to the Forefathers pays homage to the unflinching character and determination of the Mayflower Pilgrims that settled in the area.
Designed by 19th-century artist Hammatt Billings, the monument represents the enduring ideals that the Pilgrims prioritized and encapsulates the beliefs that guided the founding of the United States. Personifications of faith, liberty, law, morality, and education adorn the granite structure.
Thanks to the efforts of advocates like filmmaker Kirk Cameron, this monument has recently recieved increased attention. It reminds us that America's story isn't just a tale of historical achievement. It's also a testament to the moral and spiritual convictions that built and continue to shape our nation. | | | EPOCH TV | | | OPINION | | | EPOCH FUN | | |
